Job Purpose:
To support research projects using knowledge of IP law to provide advice and guidance across the breadth of the company’s research activities and managing the patent portfolio and internal processes.
Key Activities:
- Analysing third-party patents to identify strategic risks and working with research project leaders to develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensuring timely filing of strong patent applications by coordinating with inventors and external counsel to draft patents that provide optimal scope of protection and enforceability.
- Working with external counsel and inventors to ensure responses to Office Actions are in line with business objectives.
- Managing the patent portfolio and internal processes.
The successful candidate will have/be:
- Educated to PhD level in Chemistry, Physics, or Biochemistry, or alternatively a degree with additional relevant work experience in research or intellectual property in a scientific research environment gained in either an academia or scientific industry.
- Experience in patent drafting, invalidation searches, infringement searches, prior art searches and Freedom to Operate (FTO).
- Knowledge of IP laws, various patent databases, and technical domains.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or within a team using own initiative, in combination with a willingness to seek expert assistance and peer advice when required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to clearly present insights and recommendations, involving complex technical concepts, adapted to technical, non-subject matter experts and non-technical audiences.
