In this position, the associate’s primary assignments are to provide legal counsel to firm clients. Associates are expected to conduct legal research, prepare drafts of correspondence, motions and memoranda, review documents and collect factual data, complete discrete research assignments at the request of partners, of counsel and senior associates, provide legal advice to pro bono clients and research applicable statutes and regulations. 

Primary Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

    Performing a variety of tasks under the direct supervision of a partner or more senior associate; seeking to understand, and become engaged in, each project and its related elements as fully as possible; 

    Communicating to supervisors fully, and in a timely manner, status of task completion and new developments that may impact the project or case;

    Demonstrating teamwork in their work and relationships with partners, associates, paralegals and staff; earn the respect of lawyers, paralegals and staff with whom they work; 

    Participating fully in professional development programs hosted by the Firm, PG (Practice Group) and office; 

    Keeping current on legal developments through self-study and reading; 

    Becoming proficient in the basic technology systems used by the Firm; 

    Attaining proficiency with practice-specific technology applications; 

    Devoting a minimum 20 hours a year to pro bono legal service; and adhere fully to the administrative requirements of the Firm and their PG (i.e. timely submission of timesheets, compliance with Firm policies regarding client disbursements and conflicts, etc.);

    Engaging in practice development activities: assist with articles, speeches and presentations; participate in networking opportunities; build relationships within and outside the Firm; learn about the Firm's practices, offices and business; and demonstrate pride in the Firm; and

    Adhering to Client/Practice Group budget; seek opportunities to improve Practice Group efficiency and reduce expenses by streamlining operations.


Experience Needed:

- Must be admitted to practice in an EU Member State and hold a valid practicing certificate.

- Strong academic background, including a Bachelor’s Degree (minimum 2.1) and completion of relevant legal qualifications.

- Minimum three years post-qualification legal experience in a law firm or other comparable legal environment.

- Must be a national of one of the Member States of the EEA (European Economic Area), in order to satisfy EUIPO rules on professional representation;

- Must be able to speak and write English fluently;

- Experience of all aspects of trade mark prosecution before the EUIPO, including filing trade mark and registered design applications, oppositions, cancellation and invalidity actions;

- Experience of international trade mark prosecution working with counsel in other jurisdictions;

- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop relationships with all levels of personnel; 

- Ability to read, analyse, and interpret business and professional publications, prepare business correspondence, proposals and reports, and effectively present the information;

- Must be able to compose reports, business correspondence and legal documents in appropriate formats. 

- Must be able to present information effectively and respond to questions or challenges both in writing and in person;

- Ability to reason and use logical thinking patterns to define problems, collect data, establish facts and patterns and draw logical conclusions based on local and EU law and legal principles; and

- Ability to relate clearly to relevant issues to individuals and groups of various backgrounds and engage in the meaningful exchange of ideas.

- Proficient in MicroSoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and ideally Lexis Nexis, Westlaw and other research applications
